What makes up a yoga class anyway?

inhale_mindfulness

So you’re ready to get a self yoga practice started but you are not sure how to structure it. Today I am giving you all of the components that should be a part of every yoga practice. All yoga practices should have three basic components whether it’s 10 minutes or an hour long. In order to gain maximum benefit from your practice you should always aim to hit these three components.

Centering

You always want to start off your yoga practice with centering yourself. Centering can be done in a variety of ways. In my next blog post I am going to go over in detail a few ways you can do centering. For today an easy way to center yourself is to just sit, either in a chair or on the floor, and close your eyes taking a few deep cleansing breaths. This allows you to get your mind space and heart space set up well for your practice.

Asanas

Next you will have your asanas (more commonly known as poses). If you are short on time you may only pick a couple poses for the day. If you have more time you may have many poses you want to flow through. Furthermore you can spend as little time or as much time in each pose but it should never hurt to be in a posture.

Shavasana

Finally you will always want to end your practice with a shavasana (corpse pose). 10-15 minutes of shavasana would be ideal, although I understand you may only have 10 minutes for your entire practice for the day. If you are shorter on time I would try to be in shavasana for at least 2 minutes to soak in your practice. Shavasana allows your body and mind to soak in the practice and just be. It allows your mind to be quiet and your body relax.

Now that you have this information you can go and practice your own flow. If you still are unsure of yoga poses or still don’t have a grasp on structuring a flow don’t worry in the next few weeks I will be posting a flow you can follow. I encourage you, if you feel comfortable, to try your own flow tomorrow even if it is a short practice. I hope this information helps you and can give you a jump start on a daily yoga practice.
