Shavasana

Shavasana

inhale_mindfulness

You just completed the main portion of your yoga practice and you think it is time to be done but now comes the most important part. Now you lie on your back and soak in all of the benefits from the practice you just did. Even though it may be easy to just be done after the physical part of your practice do not skip shavasana. So just why is shavasana so important? Let me explain.

First Let’s Understand

Shavasana (aka corpse pose) is the pose where you lie flat on your back with your arms and legs extended. If you have any issue laying flat on your back you can place a bolster or pillow under your knees to provide some comfort in the back. It is the only pose that should be included in every yoga practice. Shavasana is the time for us to put everything aside and just let go.

Physically it allows us to return to a relaxed state after a physical practice.

Mentally it helps us become aware that we are more than the body itself. This time allows us to get acquainted with our minds and experience the stillness. This time calms the central nervous system that has ben heightened by the physical portion of the practice.

Now Put It To Practice

I know what you’re thinking…there is no way I can just lay here for 5-10 minutes because I have a laundry list of things to do. That may be the case in your mind but that means you need shavasana even more than you know. I encourage you to try doing 5-10 minutes of shavasana at the end of your yoga practice for the next month and just notice how you feel.

Once you finish the physical part of your yoga practice lie on your yoga mat on your back and close your eyes. Do not get caught up in what is going on in your mind just be an observer. Let your thoughts come and go but don’t pay attention to them. Focus on your breathing but don’t alter your breath. Be still and notice how your body feels. After 5-10 minutes (you can go longer if you want) start to bring awareness and movement back to your body. Start with gently moving your hands and feet and then begin making some larger movements. Next roll onto one side and push yourself up to sitting. Once you are sitting take a couple of breaths and slowly open your eyes.

Congratulations! You just enjoyed a relaxing shavasana and let the physical part of your practice soak in.
